Doctoral studies at the Department of German Language and Literature of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens are organized and operated in accordance with the applicable institutional framework in force at any given time. Their aim is to promote original scientific research and they lead to the award of a Doctoral Degree (PhD). The Doctoral Degree certifies the completion of original scientific research and the substantial contribution of its holder to the advancement of knowledge in the relevant academic field.
As proof of the ability to produce independent scientific work, based on a written original research study (doctoral dissertation) and an oral examination on the content of the dissertation and the academic field in which it was conducted (dissertation defence), the Department of German Language and Literature of the School of Philosophy of the NKUA awards the title Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. phil.).
The topic of the doctoral dissertation must be directly related to the academic fields of the Department and must correspond to its academic profile and to the research interests of the Department’s faculty members. This is determined by the dissertation supervisor and by the Department’s Assembly to which the application is submitted. In cases of exceptional academic achievement, the Department may propose the award of the title Honorary Doctorate (Doctor Honoris Causa).
