The Department of Theatre Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) and the Laboratory for Research & Documentation of Modern Greek Theatre, in collaboration with the research project The Unlikely Margin of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (Austrian Science Fund T1336-G), are organizing the international conference:
“Reclaiming the Spectacle”
The conference focuses on performative and embodied practices of spectacle, examining them as strategic tools of expression, resistance, and self-determination from marginalized social positions. Spectacle practices in uncharted geographical and historical contexts (focus on Greece & the Mediterranean, 19th–20th century)
Spectacle and marginalization (migration, diaspora, class/gender/race-based discrimination)
Détournements of entertainment and spectacularity
Contemporary practices using new technologies (AI, big data, metadata)
Types of contributions:
Theoretical papers
Practice-based research presentations
Lecture-performances
The call is open to early-career researchers, PhD candidates, and PhD holders.
